As I was growing up, I was taught the mantra that to get ahead in life you simply needed to work hard to get what you wanted. Many years after leaving school I found that the mantra had started to change.
Gurus started appearing and began teaching people how they could get ahead in life and have what they had. Their revised mantra was to get ahead you simply needed to work smarter and not harder. Which seemed to me to make total sense. The gurus had their own unique paint by numbers success formula which you could purchase and if you followed it you too would be successful.
Eager to get ahead I’d purchase the guru’s success formula and set about creating my own success. Following the steps as closely as I could I set about creating my own success. But I reached the point where I’d hit a wall and not get any further.
Not to be dismayed I reasoned that there was something wrong with the guru and that’s what was causing me not to get ahead. So, I found another guru and bought their success formula and set to work on becoming successful and again would hit the wall.
Reasoning through what occurred I came to the conclusion it must be the product that the gurus had advised to use was the problem. I went and found other gurus who’d had success selling different products, products that seemed to be in demand. Again and again, I hit the same wall.
I began reflecting on what I had experienced with each of the gurus to see if I could work out a pattern on what was going on. I noticed that with each of the gurus there were always a small number of people who would have varying levels of success following what the guru had taught. So, I could see that the problem was not with the gurus or the product which left me at a dead end.
There was one phrase that one of the gurus would often say which kept playing in my head “you need to get out of the way of yourself.” There was something about it that I somehow knew was the key. In my mind, I ran through all of the actions that I’d completed following each of the guru’s particular formulas to success.
What I started to notice though was that there wasn’t anything physically that I was doing that was stopping me. While playing through in my mind what occurred following each guru, I noticed again and again while I was going through the physical actions that lead to success I was consistently thinking “it’s not going to work for me”.
Now with the realisation that what was occurring between my ears, was affecting my level of success. I began reading and completing courses to help me transform my thinking. Transform the thinking, which had been holding me back, to having thinking which would help me move forward.
In the process, I began to have some success and realised that after I had cleared one mental hurdle, I’d inevitably find I reached the next mental hurdle. I’ve learnt that if you want to keep growing and completing new goals, you’re going to always keep reaching new mental hurdles to clear, it’s simply the price of admission to the next level.
I started off being one of those people who always liked to do everything themselves. Over the years I’ve learnt that there are some things you are better off doing yourself and there are other things which it’s wise to get some help with.
Getting help to clear those mental hurdles is one of those things I’ve found worth getting help with. I’ve found that having a coach has allowed me to make more progress in a shorter space of time. It’s also allowed me to grow in ways in which I didn’t expect to.
If there’s something, you feel that’s holding you back or slowing you down.
